10 Personnel
What is 10 personnel in football?
10 personnel is an offensive grouping with one running back, zero tight ends, and four wide receivers. It is the spread offense in its purest form, built to stretch the defense horizontally, isolate matchups, and make every defender declare where they are before the snap.
Where 10 personnel comes from
Four-receiver sets grew out of the Air Raid and spread-to-run offenses that took over college football in the 2000s. With no tight end to block, the offense trades power for space: the quarterback reads the box, and the run game usually relies on zone schemes, option elements, and the threat of the quick pass to keep defenders out of it.
How defenses respond
Four receivers almost always pull a dime defender onto the field or at least a nickel. Defenses that stay in base personnel against 10 personnel are conceding a linebacker in space, so most will match with six defensive backs and play with a light box, which is exactly the trade the offense wants.
The 10 personnel depth chart
A 10 personnel chart lists QB, RB, four receivers (commonly X, Z, H, and Y or two outside and two slots), and the five linemen. If your program lives in four-wide sets, the receiver room is where most of the depth chart arguments happen.
Frequently asked
- Is 10 personnel the same as empty?
- No. Empty is a formation with no one in the backfield. 10 personnel is a grouping with one running back, who may line up in the backfield or split out. You can run empty from 10 personnel, but 10 personnel is not always empty.
- Does 10 personnel have a tight end?
- No. The 0 in 10 personnel means zero tight ends. Four wide receivers fill the skill spots alongside one running back.
